 Sustainable Products

In general, when it comes to purchasing products, we are accustomed to thinking only about the economic benefit and utility that provide. However, many products available today are designed with precisely this focus, not considering durability (long-term use) or the ecological footprint they impose on nature. Therefore, we must be more mindful of the products we buy, as they often cause more harm to the planet than the benefits they bring to us as individuals.

There are also strategies that help capitalism thrive but have adverse effects on the planet. Among these, I would like to highlight planned obsolescence. It is more common than we might think. This strategy involves creating a product with a certain lifespan, regardless of whether it could last longer, compelling consumers to keep buying the products. This happens more often in appliances and clothing than in food products.

How to help the environment by purchasing sustainable products:

  1. We all need to consider our personal situations, as spending varies for a family of five compared to a single person. Therefore, we should aim to reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible, to ilustrate by choosing brands with a little environmental impact that are still accessible to the general public.

  2. Buying clothing from local artisans or national and provincial creators can reduce your ecological footprint. These products typically involve more artisanal processes, which are less polluting, and they are often more durable, meaning you won't need to repurchase them for a long time.

  3. Shopping at local markets can be a great option, as the vendors there generally don't waste massive quantities like supermarkets, and they make the most of their products while supporting local businesses.

  4. Opting for white meat over red meat in your diet can be more environmentally friendly. White meat production generally has a lower environmental footprint due to the animals involved, so consuming it regularly can benefit both the environment and your health.

If you´ve the opportunity, consider buying food from brands with a smaller environmental footprint and choose sustainable and eco-friendly utensils, appliances, and furniture. Even though not everyone may buy these, your choice can contribute in a small way to change.
